Senior Citizens' Law Day

Saturday, September 24th will be a day for new beginnings! The annual Senior Citizens' Law Day, a service project of the San Joaquin College of Law Alumni Association, is providing new and exciting services this year.

Many seniors find that when the stop driving, they no longer have a current drivers license to use as identification and facing the DMV can be a daunting event. This year the Department of Motor Vehicles will assist us at our event by hosting a free clinic to help seniors obtain identification. If you have had a drivers license, even if it has expired, and you are 62 years of age or older, you can get a senior identification card at this event. If you have not previously had a drivers license, but have proof of citizenship (birth certificate or US passport) or current papers from ICE (immigration) showing you are in the country legally, bring them with you and you, too, may be able to get your identification card the same day!

In addition to the Identification clinic, Cathy Sharbaugh, Esq. will be available to talk about how to provide for your pets in the case of your death or disability through the use of a pet trust. For many, their pets are their closest family members and this valuable planning helps to keep your pet safe from becoming a statistic at the shelter.

Nancy Le Van, Esq., an elder law attorney and alum of San Joaquin College of Law, will be coordinating with community outreach groups to provide information for seniors from safe and reliable non-profit organizations. In this era of dwindling resources, it is important to know what is available and whom to trust.

Finally, Deborah Boyett, Esq. and Cynthia Benzler, director of CastleKeep a non-profit dedicated to protecting the elderly will talk about taking charge of your finances and protecting yourself from predators, many of whom would love to separate seniors from their hard earned cash. The program begins at 9:00am and ends at 12:30 pm and we will have snacks available during the breaks. Please call SJCL to reserve your place at this exciting event. (559)323-2100.
